At University Science High School (USHS), the teaching schedule runs from 7:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday to Friday. Each subject is allocated 60 minutes for a learning hour, including Physical Education and Health classes.

The classroom observation took place in the second week of the program, specifically on Tuesday, February 4, 2025. The observation focused on a Physical Education class covering the topic of Street Dance and Hip-Hop Styles. The lesson began with the teacher greeting the students, checking on their well-being, and ensuring the classroom was properly arranged. The teacher then conducted a review of the previous lesson, allowing students to recall what they had learned before introducing the new material.

Next, the teacher presented the day’s lesson using a PowerPoint presentation prepared in advance. The student-centered learning approach was applied, where students were actively involved throughout the lesson. Instead of the teacher solely delivering explanations, students were asked to read aloud from the slides and interpret the meaning, fostering engagement and discussion. This approach ensured that students were more involved and encouraged to think critically, rather than passively listening to the teacher’s explanations.

Physical Education (PE) at CLSU USHS focuses on movement skills, sports science, and health education. Students use textbooks such as the DepEd Physical Education Curriculum Guide (Grades 7–12), Fundamentals of Physical Education by Wuest & Bucher, and Physical Education and Health for Senior High School (Rex Book Store) to learn about fitness principles, sports rules, and overall wellness.
Learning resources are not limited to MAPEH textbooks. Students can explore other books, online articles, and research materials, helping them develop digital literacy and adapt to future challenges. To enhance critical thinking and creativity, teachers encourage students to conduct independent research on topics before or after lessons, allowing for deeper understanding beyond classroom instruction.
Classrooms are equipped with whiteboards and smart TVs for presentations, while teachers use laptops to create an engaging and interactive learning experience.
Assesment Model
During my observation, the teacher used two types of authentic assessments to evaluate students' learning and performance in Physical Education:

1. Quiz-Based Assessment
A quiz was conducted to assess students' understanding of key concepts and measure how well they absorbed the lesson. It included:
-
Multiple-choice questions to test fundamental knowledge.
-
Short-answer questions to encourage deeper thinking.
-
Application-based questions requiring students to analyze movement techniques.
This method ensured students not only memorized information but also understood the principles behind the movements.

2. Performance-Based Assessment
To evaluate practical application, students were assessed on their hip-hop dance performance based on the following criteria:

By combining quiz-based and performance-based assessments, students were evaluated holistically, ensuring they developed both cognitive understanding and practical skills essential for Physical Education.
